Chapter Ten

Bang, bang, bang.

Lucy gripped her skull, urging the hateful noise to disappear. She tried to sit up, but it was like a lead blanket lay atop her body, and any movement made her nauseous.

And her head. Oh goodness! Her head was in a vise.

Bang, bang, bang!

The pounding wrenched the vise tighter around her skull. She wanted to die. Why couldn’t they leave her alone so she could die in peace? Why this torture?

“Lucy!” Kimi’s voice called out, panicked.

“Here,” she croaked.

The door banged open and Lucy peeled one eyelid up, but all she saw was a blur with dark hair.

“Hallelujah.” Kimi landed on the mattress, and the ropes creaked under the sudden pressure. “Chayton said Will and he found you after you’d wandered off last night, but when you weren’t in your bed, I worried you’d wandered off again.”

Both of Lucy’s eyelids peeled apart and the room came into view; the mahogany furniture, the maroon fabric on the chairs, the dark quilt pulled up to her neck.

“This is Will’s room.”

Kimi furrowed her brow. “Why are you surprised?”

Lucy scooted up and the quilt fell down, exposing her breasts. She screeched. She peeked underneath the covers and screeched again. “I’m not dressed!”

At the foot of the bed was a crumpled animal pelt. Kimi lifted it and Lucy realized it was an article of clothing. A very small article of clothing.

“Was I wearing that last night?”

Kimi extended it out to Lucy, who swatted it away.

“Don’t you remember?” Kimi asked.

Lucy put her knuckles against her mouth, her mind crawling over the murky waters of her memory, but only a few bits bobbed to the surface.

“There were drums and fire. And the stars twinkled so much I thought I could touch them. Yes, I floated up to them and…how did I end up here in that sliver of cloth?”

“I know part of the answer, Sister.” Kimi chewed her lip and eyed Lucy warily.

“Tell me.” Lucy gripped the quilt under her chin, afraid of the truth but desperate to know.

“After you had that drink, you wandered off to the pond and took your clothes off for a swim.”

“What?!”

“Don’t worry. Sotsona found you before anyone noticed and brought you to her hut and dressed you in that hide while she mended your dress. You went to sleep on her mat, but when she returned to the hut, you’d left.”

Lucy’s escalated heart rate made her already shaky state more fragile. This could ruin Will’s reputation and hurt his business. What had made her walk through the woods in the middle of the night half naked?

“It’s not your fault, Luce.” Kimi smiled. “That drink was very strong. I only took a sip, but you drank nearly the whole thing.”

“I didn’t know what it was! Why didn’t you tell me it had something in it?” Lucy threw her anger and shame at Kimi. “What if someone saw me!”

Kimi stared at Lucy nonplussed.

“No one of importance was around. Only a few members of the tribe. And I doubt anyone was on the road in the dark of night when you stumbled home.
